KISSIMMEE, FL (ContentDesk) July 7, 2005 -- Fireworks and backyard barbecues weren't the only things heating up Kissimmee on July 4. Residents cranked up air conditioners to escape Monday's heat and humidity, pushing customer demand for electricity to a new, all-time record for Kissimmee Utility Authority (KUA).On Monday, KUA customers used 300.7 megawatts (MW) of electricity at 5:31 p.m., eclipsing the former mark of 298.7 MW set on July 6, 2004. The recorded system temperature at the time of the peak was 103 degrees.KUA offers the following energy-saving tips that require little or no expense and can help to reduce summertime energy costs:* Set the thermostat at 80 degrees or warmer with the fan switch on "auto." For additional savings, raise the thermostat to 82 degrees or warmer when away from home. Raising the temperature just 2 degrees can reduce cooling costs by as much as 5 percent.* Keep bright sunlight out. Close blinds, drapes and shades during the hottest time of day to block the sun's heat.* Remember that window air conditioning units generally are not designed to cool more than one room.* Clean or replace window unit or central air conditioning system filters monthly.

The 11th annual Project EAGLE Cleanup was conducted Saturday, April 24th on the Winter Haven Chain of Lakes, in Winter Haven, Florida.Organized by the Keep Winter Haven Clean and Beautiful and the Kissimmee River Valley Sportsman's Association, over 300 volunteers in airboats, pontoon boats, pleasure boats, kayaks and on foot collected over three tons of garbage and another one ton of solid junk that included shopping carts, TVs, automobile tires, batteries, air conditioners, vacuum cleaners and safes during a four hour period.
