AllMed Healthcare: Should Case Managers Approve VNS (Vagal Nerve Stimulation) Therapy For Major Depression?

(ContentDesk) June 29, 2006 -- AllMed Healthcare Management Medical Specialist Jack Abramson has recently authored a feature article Should Case Managers Approve VNS (Vagal Nerve Stimulation) Therapy For Major Depression? that is featured on the AllMed Healthcare website.
The article may be viewed by clicking the following link: http://www.allmedmd.com/resources/articles/vns.htmlVagal nerve stimulation (VNS) is a new proposed procedure for treating resistant depression. In VNS, a therapy pulse generator and lead are surgically implanted and external programming is used to change the stimulation setting.
In July 2005, the FDA approved VNS as an adjunctive long-term treatment for chronic or recurrent depression.
Still the safety and efficacy of VNS has not been established.

There are no randomized controlled studies demonstrating efficacy for the patient. The non-randomized efficacy analysis is riddled with the potential for bias since most of the literature on VNS was sponsored by the device manufacturer.
The FDA approval letter reversed a non-approval letter issued in late 2004.
Medical case managers should be aware that there is no pertinent clinical data available from well-conducted randomized controlled or cohort trials in the prevailing peer-reviewed published medical literature adequately concluding that VNS therapy is safe and effective for the treatment of therapy resistant depression.More information on AllMed and the companys peer review & medical review services can be found on AllMeds web site at http://www.allmedmd.com/ .About AllMed Healthcare ManagementFounded in 1995, AllMed (http://www.allmedmd.com/)

Walt Disney World Embraces Guests of All Shapes, Sizes, and Abilities

Ann Arbor, MI (ContentDesk) August 25, 2005 -- America's most popular resort destination makes it to the top of the charts for many reasons?a hug from Mickey, a childhood revisited, a cleaner, safer, friendlier world....Chief among them is Disney's hospitality. Every visitor is a guest, and Disney's parks, restaurants and hotels strive to embrace everyone. It's hardly a one-size-fits-all world at Disney's Orlando property, yet everyone seems to fit.
Sometimes these efforts are obvious?you'll see more wheelchairs and electric scooters in Disney parks than you're likely to see anywhere else unless it's a medical center or retirement community. More often though, it's the invisible?accommodations available for those who know to ask: - devices to help a hearing- or vision-impaired guest enjoy a show - theme park maps and translation devices in six languages - "Special assistance" for children with autism or ADD - a sheltered spot to breastfeed an infant - chefs and waiters schooled...

Energy Use Surges to New High in Kissimmee

KISSIMMEE, FL (ContentDesk) July 7, 2005 -- Fireworks and backyard barbecues weren't the only things heating up Kissimmee on July 4. Residents cranked up air conditioners to escape Monday's heat and humidity, pushing customer demand for electricity to a new, all-time record for Kissimmee Utility Authority (KUA).On Monday, KUA customers used 300.7 megawatts (MW) of electricity at 5:31 p.m., eclipsing the former mark of 298.7 MW set on July 6, 2004. The recorded system temperature at the time of the peak was 103 degrees.KUA offers the following energy-saving tips that require little or no expense and can help to reduce summertime energy costs:* Set the thermostat at 80 degrees or warmer with the fan switch on "auto." For additional savings, raise the thermostat to 82 degrees or warmer when away from home. Raising the temperature just 2 degrees can reduce cooling costs by as much as 5 percent.* Keep bright sunlight out. Close blinds, drapes and shades during the hottest time of day to block...
